Zinc in soils, crops and food in Mali, West Africa

Zinc is an essential element for organisms and considered to be in short supply for humans especially in developping countries. In the Sahel area this is likely to be common due to soil conditions and food consumption pattern, the latter as a result of rice gradually replacing millet and sorghum.
The work is planned to be done in Mali in Timbuktu or Niafunke north of the Niger inland delta. It is planned to be part of a study of food intake of zinc. The study would preferably be done in February-March due to climatic reasons and ease of travelling.
