Quantum Information and Cryptography

Are you interested in optics and electronics? Are you also interested in doing some quantum physics that is not found standard textbooks? In the quantum optics at KTH Electronics Dept. (www.ele.kth.se) we are presently studying the use of quantum effects to achieve novel feats in communication that cannot be done by classical means. One such application is Quantum cryptography whereby one establish a secret key for encryption by sending single photons in an optical fibre in such a way that any eavesdropping will be detected.

We now have two thesis projects in this area:
1) Buildup of an experimental setup for single photon detection based on Avalanche Photo Diodes at a wavelength of 1.55 micrometer, followed by the detailed characterisation of the APDs. We have some experience already on this, partly acquired in a thesis project jointly with Telia Research, ut would now be interested in a more detailed investigation. If you are interested in electronics and experimental work, this is something for you.

2) Hardware Implementation of full quantum cryptographic protocol for key transmission. This work is mixed theoretical and experimental. Some background in instrument control (LABWIEW and GPIB) is useful but not
compulsory. Presently we have an ongoing theoretical thesis project on the software and coding aspects of quantum cryptography
In both cases, the results of the project will be used an implemented into our projects towards the realisation of a systems demonstrator. We also have some collaboration with the optical network group at Telia Research and with some European groups.
