Effects of high temperature on cross-linked PEX. Methods to detect and calculate effect of high temperature.

Background
Uponor AB is specialized on solutions for VVS and infrastructure in the field of building construction and environment. Uponor AB in Virsbo, north of Västerås, produces pipes from crosslinked polyethylene, PE-Xa, that are used for heating/cooling-systems and for distribution of drinking water.



Task
The task is to develop a method to detect if pipes have been exposed to high temperature. In the task is also to study how the pipes have been affected by high temperature. The target is to be able to find answers following questions:
- How high has the temperature been in different parts of the pipe?
- For how long time has it been exposed to the high temperature?
- Are there any subsequent damages locally or in other parts of the system?
- Has the overall lifetime of the pipe been affected, and in that case – how much?

PEX pipes can be cross-linked by mainly three different methods; peroxide, silane or irradiation. The cross-linking can occur in solid or molten phase, and during the processing structural changes takes place in the material.

In the task is to map how different processing parameters affect the material. The target is to be able to identify and separate processing-effects from effects of the high temperature.



Uponor AB has got a well equipped laboratory for characterization of materials and measurement of mechanical and thermal processes. Effects from processing could be analyzed by DSC and FTIR, both are available at Uponor.
