Methods for highly efficient packet generation

Packet generators are crucial components in performance testing and validation of network hardware and software. With an ever increasing demand for performance in network equipment there is a need to be able to reliably verify the performance on a day-to-day basis in a scalable and cost efficient manner. Recent developments in multi-core hardware architectures allows for development of tools and methods to perform these types of tests in a much more cost efficient manner than ever before.

Suitable background
Master students with an education in computer and/or electronic technology are preferred. Experience of multi-core network processing units is a merit.

Description of thesis work
The primary objective with the thesis work is to evaluate methods for performance testing and validation as well as implementing software using these methods, suitable to run on multi-core hardware architectures. The selected methods will need to support packet generation of custom configurable packets at a configured rate, as well as providing key indicators such as sent/received packets and latency during the test run.
