Emission Modeling and Simulation-based Traffic Environment Management

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Introduction
Transport has increased dramatically over the past two decades. In the European transport system, road traffic increases at an average rate of 2-3% per year. Sustainability is a rather important issue for transportation management, because on one hand transport development is connected with social economic growth while on the other hand it puts enormous pressure on the global environment. Reduction of fuel consumption and air pollution induced by traffic has therefore become a more and more serious concern in transport and traffic management and operation as well as for vehicle industry. To meet requirements on sustainable development, simulation-based transport management system has become a powerful tool for evaluation and operation of large scale transportation systems. In Centre for Traffic Research (CTR), our recent research work ranges from vehicle emission modeling using portable measurement system (PEMS) data to evaluation of network traffic induced pollution using integrated simulation of traffic and emissions.

Master thesis
Currently, we provide topics of master thesis in several subjects:
- Vehicle emission modeling using PEMS data;
- Evaluation of traffic environment using traffic and emission simulation;
- Optimization of traffic control with respect to emission reduction.
The topics are all related to our current research on dynamic traffic and environmental impact modeling and simulation.

M.Sc. Students with related backgrounds such as civil and environmental engineering as well as mechanical or vehicle engineering may be appropriate for the projects. The students should have solid analytical skills and programming ability such as using MATLAB to solve optimization problems. You may also need to grasp some commercial traffic simulation software.
