Development of a Prototype System for Milling Tool Condition Monitoring

The aim of this MSc thesis work is to develop a live working prototype system for tool condition monitoring. Previous work on identifying the condition of the milling tool using non intrusive measurements of data from Dekel Maho milling machines at Berg Propulsion showed promising results and now we want to implement these results. Focus will be aimed at implementing a prototype system that is able to monitor the working condition of the milling tool using acoustic emission signals from the milling machine passively collected during operation. Previously developed methods and algorithms will be implemented in this prototype system and the main goal of the system is to detect a certain amount of tool wear.

This MSc thesis work will be performed at Mälardalen University but will involve trips to Berg Propulsion in Gothenbourg. The goal of this MSc thesis work is to develop and implement in a prototype system able to detect a certain amount of tool wear in a live production environment. Driven and outgoing students with good programming skills are prefered as this thesis work and the prototype system will be developed and evaluated in close collaboration with technicians at the Berg Propulsion production factory.

This MSc thesis work will involve the following activities:

1. Find suitable recording equipment
2. Collect and analyse data from production
3. Analyse data to find ideal stages in the milling process that can be used to classify tool wear (using previously developed methods)
4. Development of protoytype system that is able to detect certain amount of tool wear
5. Evaluation of prototype and presentation of results
