Master Thesis Work at Saab Automobile
Influence on driving style and fuel consumption with powertrain calibration.

We are about 3500 employees in Sweden and most of us work at the headquarters in Trollhättan. We develop and produce premium cars with new innovative technology for customers on more than 60 markets around the word. We work with the complete process from idea, design, development, engineering and manufacturing to analysis, validation and sales.

Background
With increasing control capabilities in vehicles, a number of opportunities for offering various “driving modes” such as SPORT-mode or Manual mode in Automatic transmissions have been developed by SAAB and other OEM’s. In its simplest form this means changing the ECM (engine) calibration to obtain “better throttle response”. More sophisticated variants contain new calibrations and new functionality for the automatic transmission, chassis (handling / ride comfort) and steering (response / on-center / forces).
With increasing attention on CO2 emissions (directly related to Fuel Consumption) there is a need to study if also offering an ECO-mode would make sense. With an ECO vehicle calibration mode, focus would be not only on certified fuel consumption in standardized driving cycles, but to assist the driver to a fuel-saving driving style in every way.

Objective / Content
The objective of this Master Thesis project is to establish relationships between various Powertrain calibration parameters, influencing the vehicle’s DriveQuality as well as the certified Fuel Consumption, and the driver behavior / driving style. The main contents would be:
• Introduction, briefing on current status, kick-off with team and stake-holders
• Literature studies on standardized certification driving cycles and “real-life” fuel consumption
• Competition Benchmark and Analysis of already collected vehicle data
• Setting up of continued data logging, Validation of models and simulations
• Report and presentation

Methods
The project can be outlined as a B Sc or a M Sc Master Thesis.
