IKEA Transport Global, a key actor in the complex IKEA Supply Chain, is responsible for the total steering, co-ordination and development of IKEA transportation. The business is divided into four categories and operated through five Transport Areas around the world.

Master Thesis: Scenario analysis of the intermodal market in Germany

A vast majority of the IKEA land transport in Germany is done with trucks. Increased transport volumes within and through Germany together with a tough truck transport market creates a need of new solutions. One way of securing transport capacity is to create a network design with corridors, where intermodal solutions are an important part. In order to make the right decisions when creating the network design, it is important not only to have a clear picture of the market today, but also to understand what drives it and what the future risks and opportunities are.

The purpose of the thesis is to describe and analyse the intermodal transport market in Germany in order to create increased robustness for the future development.
Your role is to
• Describe capacities and restrictions in the intermodal market in Germany.
• Identify stakeholders and the trends that drives the intermodal market.
• Identify the two most critical uncertainties with help of a cross impact analysis and create a scenario cross in order to build scenarios that help us to understand future risks.
• Draw conclusions from the findings.



We are looking for 2 master students within the field of engineering logistics; students on the Industrial Engineering and Management Program.We see that you have knowledge of the land and intermodal transport market and within supply chain. You are self driven and have interest in analytical work. Your English is excellent both written and oral and you have good computer skills, especially Word, Excel and PPT.
