Misuse objects for pedestrian protection sensing development
Pedestrian protection has grown in importance for the vehicle industry during the last decade, and more challenges are foreseen in future regulations as well as consumer test requirements. Traditionally pedestrian protection systems are passive, i.e. the vehicle front has a design which incorporates enough space between outer surface and hard underlying structures, e.g. engine.
Saab is currently investigating a different concept were the hood is active. If a pedestrian is hit, the hood is raised which dynamically increase the space between the outer surface and hard underlying structures. This concept needs a pedestrian sensing system which discriminates a pedestrian from other objects; e.g. traffic guiding system, small animals, tree branches, footballs etc.
At Saab we have a simulation based vehicle development process, which means that physical prototype series are to a large content replaced by virtual vehicles (simulations). By utilizing simulation we can already from the start identify enablers and road blocks for a robust pedestrian protection sensing system. The objective for this thesis work is to develop misuse objects and validate them towards various experimental tests.
The project can be outlined as:
1. Literature studies
2. Development of simulation misuse object models.
3. Experimental testing / simulations
4. Data analysis / Correlation of simulation models
5. Documentation of findings
