FE modelling technique for NVH

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Background of thesis project
The trend within Volvo and within automotive industry in general is to put more emphasis on virtual development and to go directly into production tools without tests on prototypes. This trend requires state-of-art CAE tools and methods.

Within Volvo 3P we have several departments working with virtual tools and methods.

This thesis project is aiming to improve FE modelling techniques for NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) within CAB department.

Suitable background
Students - Mechanics, Engineering physics, Applied mathematics, Mechanical engineering

Description of thesis work:
When an FE model is assembled, the different parts are put together as realistic as possible. The connection between parts (often called connectors) could be spot welds, glue, seam welds, rivets, screws or as a contact interface, for example rubber sealing mouldings for doors and lids.

The different connectors can be represented in different ways, depending on the type of analysis to be performed and the actual problem at hand. Sometimes there is also a matter of personal preference and often a compromise between accuracy and time.

The aim of the thesis work is to find the “best” modelling technique for NVH with respect to:
1. How to implement the modelling technique in the existing tools
2. How to get hold of material data and properties needed
3. Confidence and accuracy of the modelling technique
4. Calculation time

The thesis project includes studies, investigations, FE implementations and physical tests. The thesis work could cover most of the connectors in a general pragmatic way. For 1-2 of the connectors, a deeper analysis should be made, which could include tests on physical parts and/or materials.

The main tools we use are: (Experience in these tools is not required for the thesis work)
• ANSA - model creation
• NASTRAN - Finite Element Method for low frequency noise and vibrations
• HYPERWORKS – Complete set of tools for model creation, analysis, post process and optimisation.
• META – post process
• MATLAB - general tool for scripting and post processes.

If you are interested in the finite element method, modelling techniques, NVH, material data, properties, testing and finally to get a good knowledge within several of the commercial softwares that are mainly used in the market, this thesis work could be for you.
