Impact of solar storms on power grid (other than transformers)

The effect of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) on power transformers is just one of the ways in which Solar Storms can influence power systems: there are other considerations that it would be useful to study at a higher-level system-perspective.

The induction of quasi-dc voltages in all large loops of suitable orientation should be seen not just as a simple single line and transformer, but also in its effect within meshed systems with a variety of transformer-connections, to assess worst and best cases. Other large loops may include communications used for protective relaying, particularly in distribution networks if `pilot-wire' differential (unit) protection is used.

Apart from GIC, there are other possible effects of a solar storm on communications: strong atmospheric ionisation can upset radio and satellite communications, upon which the increasingly networked power grid may depend more and more heavily. GPS (global positioning system) is used as the time-base for highly accurate phasor measurements, which may in future power grids be operationally important; the accuracy with which the units maintain the time when unable to contact the GPS satellites would be a necessary consideration.

It will be seen from the above that much of this project could be about exploring the possible effects of solar storms, and interactions of communication and power networks, and that some remedies can be quite simple matters of suitable specification of components. This sort of forward-thinking about contingencies may be of great value, providing large gains in robustness for small changes in design; with major solar storms predicted in the near future it is an interesting area for the student to gain competence in.
