Fibre network structure generation and analysis in C++

Background:
PaperOpt is a large research project co-finansed by Vinnova in collaboration with Mid Sweden Univeristy, STFI-Packforsk, Karlstad University, Linköping University and eight industrial partners. One of the four PhD subprojects, Optics of Paper and Prints: Structure Models, aims at understanding how the structure affects the optical response of paper and prints, and how the structure can be modified to achieve desired optical response. Within this project, we now offer three thesis works for the partial
development of a simulation model, including an open source platform for Monte Carlo simulations,
in the absolute frontline of research.
The standard Monte Carlo scheme simulates a random network of fibres and fillers representing the real structure of paper. A previous Master’s thesis has implemented a generator of a static fibre network that represents the fully 3D structure of paper.

Goal:
Structure and refine the C++ code for increased performance and modularity. Look for improved fibre network generator and ways of generating filler and coating distribution within and on top of the fibre network.
Approach: Start from the existing C++ code. Describe and structure new code with suitable methods (e.g. UML). High computational performance is at priority, but the code should also be structured to support modularity and future extension as open source code. Implement, test
and document new code.
