NEXT GENERATION 3D MULTIVIEW VIDEO CODING

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Background

Video data makes up a major part of the traffic in today’s communication networks. The amount is expected to grow even further due to the increase use of video services and high-resolution video. Recently 3D cinema has become a major success, with Avatar being the highest grossing movie ever, and 3D has started its way into TVs and mobile devices. In a few years it is expected that autostereoscopic 3DTVs will be available in the living rooms, providing 3D video experience without requiring any 3D glasses. With bitrate requirements even higher than those for 2D content, 3D video will further accelerate the growth of video data in the networks.

The growth of video data has initiated a new standardization effort in MPEG and ITU called High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). It will be a new standard for video compression significantly improving the successful state-of-the-art H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC codec. Extensions towards 3D video compression will start soon.

Task

The objective of this thesis is to explore new algorithms for 3D video compression in the context of HEVC. This includes analysis of key 2D video compression technologies in order to see how they apply to compression of multiple (3D) video views. The task is to implement such 3D video compression algorithms as well as develop new extensions. The thesis will contain a theoretical study, design and implementation, and a technical report.

Competence

We are looking for a bright M.Sc. student with an interest in video coding and programming. You should have good programming skills in C/C++. Experience in video coding and/or 3D video is a plus.

Ericsson Research – Visual Technology

The thesis work will be done at the Visual Technology unit at Ericsson Research in Kista outside Stockholm. The unit is responsible for research related to video & image coding, quality and processing for multimedia communication and distribution.

Applications should contain the following documents: a short personal letter, recent grades (undergraduate and master studies) and a CV. Candidates are invited to send their applications as soon as possible.

Apply online before 2011-08-21 by following the link below. Applications by e-mail are not accepted.
