Design of a high precision GPS

GPS has during the last decade revolutionized the way we navigate and get information. In todays' consumer GPS receivers the achievable accuracy is typically in the range of +-10 meters. In professional land surveying equipment, which cost around 100 000 SEK, the accuracy can be in the centimeter range. The difference in accuracy depends on the two different measurement technologies used. Consumer GPS uses pseudorange measurements and high accuracy GPS uses carrier phase measurements. Several academic publications have shown that it is possible to use consumer GPS modules for carrier phase measurements as well. In the articles an accuracy in the centimeter range was achieved.

Imagine the amount of new applications that can be invented if you can position in the centimeter range to a very low cost.

In the thesis work you will build a GPS receiver with commercially available low cost modules. Since you will use the suppliers evaluation kits no hardware design is needed. The main focus will be on implementing signal processing algorithms in an embedded Linux environment. Since most of the signal processing algorithms already exist in an open source library your work will be to understand them and modify them for your target environment. The final step in the thesis work will be to evaluate the performance of your solution and suggest further improvements in the signal processing algorithms. You also need to understand which parameters in the HW that is important and specify how they contribute to the over all performance.

Below is a summary of the thesis work content.
- Literature study in GPS principles
- Purchase the GPS, GPS antenna and processor evaluation kits.
- Connect the boards and set up the environment.
- Implement the signal processing algorithms in the target area. An open source library for most of the algorithms are available. The target environment will be with embedded Linux.
- Measure performance in a real outdoor environment to detect further improvements in the algorithms and specify important HW performance parameters.
