Freescale Semiconductor is an industry leading supplier of processors for embedded systems, devices found in anything from your washing machine and car to industrial controllers for robotics, airplanes as well as telecom/networking systems such as base-stations and core network nodes. Our latest high-end devices with 24 virtual cores gives an aggregated performance above 40GHz, with over 50 Gbps of networking interfaces, advance protocol offloading targeting it for next generation telecom and networking equipment. This state-of-art 28nm device is the target for our Master Thesis in Computer Systems / Architecture.

In modern computer, telecom and network systems it is frequently needed to connect multiple devices on a board to divide up the work among them. However, from a high-level control and maintenance it can be challenges with many “small” units. Multiprocessing is one way to group devices together so that they appear to be one unit from an operating systems point of view. This thesis is about analyzing and modifying the Linux kernel functionality to pair two devices together over a standard interface such as PCIexpress, and make them appear as one unit. The work will contain multiple steps with the ultimate goal of analyzing optimal configurations and performance for multiprocessing.

The work will give you the opportunity to work with the latest and greatest technology for the telecom and networking space. The work will mainly take place in Kista, Stockholm at the Freescale office where equipment and support will be available.

This work targets a 30 credit work, estimated 6 months of work.
