Cavity Mode Nature of Pi2 Pulsations and Coupling to Field Line Resonances

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Pi2 pusaltions are irregular geomagnetic fluctuations with periods between 40 and 150 s. They are observed following the onset of the substorm expansion phase. At low latitudes Pi2 are observed at essentially all local times, which suggests that they correspond to a cavity mode resonance of the magnetosphere. Cavity mode resonances are thought to couple to Field Line Resonances (FLRs), which leads to growth of the FLR at the expense of the cavity mode.

The project task is to compare previously obtained modelling results with data obtained from the Cluster satellites. Look for evidence of coupling between cavity modes and FLRs (this could be identified by an initial compressional component which is damped as the toroidal component grows). Evidence of coupling would only be apparent if the observations were made at a location where the compressional mode frequency matches that of a FLR. The location of the satellites with respect to nodes and anti-nodes in the waves should be taken into account.

Three months of the project work will be carried out at University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Familiarity with Matlab and basic knowledge of space physics are required.
