Modelling the relationship between Birkeland currents and ionospheric plasma flow

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
In Earth's upper atmosphere, the ionosphere, plasma circulates due to horizontal electric fields. These electric fields are strongly dependent on the vertical (or more precisely, magnetic-field aligned) flow of currents, Birkeland currents. The Birkeland currents are part of an electric circuit carrying millions of amperes of current between the ionosphere and the magnetosphere. In the ionospheric end the system is described by current continuity which together with Ohm's law yield a tensor equation relating the Birkeland current, the ionospheric electric field, and the ionospheric conductivity.

The aim of the project is to design and implement a computer programme computing the electric field in the ionosphere given the distribution of conductivity and Birkeland currents. The programme shall have a graphical interface for specifying the input data in a flexible manner as well as different ways of visualizing the output data.

To test and evaluate the programme selected events shall be studied for which satellite measurements exist against which the output data may be compared.

A strong background in computer programming is desirable as is basic knowledge of space and/or plasma physics.
