Smart windows using new electrolytes – at ChromoGenics Sweden AB

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Smart windows as electrochromic devices (ECD) have the capability of changing transparancy at the push of a button. The underlying “physics” comprises electrochemical reactions on thin metaloxide films, electronic transport in transparent ITO-films and ion-transport in a layer of aprotic electrolyte.

ChromoGenics Sweden AB in Uppsala develop and produce a unique type of ECDs based on plastic films. The electrolyte presently used is a mixture of polymer, organic solvent and a lithium salt. To improve the ECDs, new electrolytes are of interest. A very promising new type of electrolyte is room temperature molten salts (RTMS), or ionic liquids (IL) as they also are referred to.

The aim of the suggested work is to test and evaluate IL-electrolytes in ECDs. The work comprises three parts: (1) synthesis of ILs, (2) application in ECDs, (3) evaluation of the ECDs. (1) will take part at Inorganic Chemistry at KTH, (2) will be perfomed at ChromoGenics AB in Uppsala (Ph.D. Peter Georen), and (3) mainly at Applied Electrochemistry at KTH (Prof. Göran Lindbergh and Andreas Nyman).
