Study of size and shape distribution of Glaciofluvium compared to Till with 3-D image analysis

A new image analysis method for size and shape distribution of coarse clastic material has been developed. An ongoing x-jobb has studied the size and shape distribution of till at two sites, Olunda near Uppsala and Bäckseda near Vetlanda. A total of 8 samples of till have been studies; one sample consists of one ton. The preposed thesis project is to study glaciofluvial deposits in these two areas, Olunda and Bäckseda, and compare the size and shape distribution of glaciofulvium to the till.
The same general methodology is to be used for this study as has been used for the study of the till.
For each area, 3 sample will be taken in a esker in the close proximity of the till sites. On the order of 500 kg will be sieved in the field to obtain two size fractions (2-6 cm, 6-20 cm). The total weight of the sample and of the two fractions gives us the total size distribution. The size and shape distribution in 3-D will be determined for both fractions using image analysis.
The aim of the project is to determine difference in size and shape distirbution of glaciofluvium compared to till in one area as well as differences between the two field areas.
The project will be part of a larger project which studies the composition of till as an indicator of rock mass quality, funded by formas.
