Biodegradability of novel biomaterials

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Materials from renewable resources have a promising potential of being used as bioplastics as well as for carriers of active, functional additives. These materials have the unique properties necessary for combining barrier and mechanical properties with a controlled release or uptake. The Amylocoat project develops coatings where these unique material properties are utilized in combination with active components carried by the coating.

The project demonstrates the applicability of active biopolymer coatings, especially starch based coatings carrying functional components. The active components are oxygen scavengers, preservatives and anti-oxidants applied in coatings for paper and foods. The native biopolymers are naturally biodegradable but by chemical modification their resistance to water may be increased and consequently the biodegradability decreases. It is a delicate balance between material properties and biodegradability and an important aspect of the biopolymer materials produced in the project is their biodegradability. In cooperation with the Amylocoat participant Renova the biodegradability of the produced, novel materials will be investigated. Renova is the main waste manager in the Gothenburg region and has a full scale composting facility. The MSc project will utilize this facility to investigate the biodegradability of the novel materials. Another aspect of the MSc project will be an evaluation of additives to synthetic plastics, “pro-oxidants” which may render even synthetic plastics degradable in a compost.
