The role of DNA damage and repair in desiccation-tolerant tardigrades (Björndjur)

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Tardigrades are small aquatic animals, often associated with mosses and lichens, and mainly known for their extraordinary ability to survive desiccation. Several recent studies have shown that tardigrades are also tolerant to very high doses of ionising radiation. The mechanisms by which tardigrades can stand extreme desiccation and radiation is largely unknown, but an efficient system of DNA repair may be involved.

Studies have recently been initiated to investigate the amount of damage induced by desiccation and radiation in tardigrades, and there is scope for interesting student work at the front-line of our knowledge about desiccation tolerance.

Projects may involve development of methods for studying DNA-damage, quantification of damage, or studies on the patterns of DNA repair.

The projects may take place either in Kristianstad, or at a collaborating department in Stockholm.
