Space Plasma Diagnostics - Current-Voltage Sweeping

An established technique for diagnosing a plasma is to record the current-voltage relationship of a conducting probe emerged in the plasma. The shape and level of the curve characterising the relationship yields information on density and temperature in the plasma. For probes in sunlight, information is also obtained about the photoemission from the probe. In theory the procedure is simple, the current or the voltage is varied systematically while the other parameter is measured. However, in reality, in a thin plasma, it is less straightforward. The primary aim of this project is to evaluate the current-voltage sweeping for realistic plasma parameters relevant to the Mercury environment and with realistic (non-ideal) instrument characteristics emulating the MEFISTO instrument for BepiColombo, although the analysis will in principle be applicable also to probes on other spacecraft and in different space environments. Possible extensions of the project are to analyse the probe behaviour for other spacecraft than BepiColombo and to compare the modelled characteristics to measured sweep data from instruments on older spacecraft.

The project requires a background in basic plasma physics and familiarity with Matlab or similar high-level software.
