Investigation of Carbon Nanotube-DNA Interaction

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are tubular graphite structures with a diameter as small as ~1 nm, which has gained an increasing interest by the society. It is expected that CNTs may be used for electronics and composite materials, and biotechnology. Recently, the interest for these 1-dimensional nanoparticles in bioscience has been partly due to their potential as molecular tranporters through the cell membrane for drug, gene, and protein therapeutics. Functionalisation of CNTs with unspecifically or covalent bonded nucleic acids (DNA), peptides, or other biomolecules has been shown to be possible. In this work we investigate how the physical properties of Single Wall CNTs are influenced by DNA that binds to the tube surface. This is realised by imaging deposited biomolecule-SWCNT hybrids on a substrate using atomic force microscopy and subsequently performing optical vibrational spectroscopy.

The work will be performed at Göteborg University. The potential applicant should have physics or chemistry undergraduate background.
