Learning to control mass transport in heterogeneous materials

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
1. Diffusion of radioactive waste into the groundwater (fig. 1)
2. drug release from tablets (fig. 2)
3. bacterial growth and flavour sensing in foods
4. separation of proteins in chromatography columns (fig. 3)
5. the swelling rate of a diaper (fig. 3)
6. drug uptake through the human skin (fig. 4)
7. …

It requires a long list to display all the situations in which the dependence between material structure and mass transport are unknown.
Why?
Due to structural heterogeneity it is mathematically impossible to quantify the relationship between mass transport, such as diffusion or flow, and material structures.

This diploma work takes a different approach for solving the issue. The approach involves the making of model structures in MATLAB and Brownian dynamics simulations of diffusion in C++ with the aim to increase our knowledge of the inherent coupling between material structure and diffusion.

Interested?

If so, you may be a chemist or physicist with a strong background in programming either in C, FORTRAN, MATLAB or FEMLAB.
