PhD position Coherent optical communicaitons

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Coherent optical communication enables the use of both the amplitude and phase of the optical signal to convey information resulting in more effective optical communication links. Optical coherent technologies have superior performance prospects allowing for the placement of a large number of high capacity channels very close to each other due to its intrinsic channel selectivity of coherent detection. Moreover, coherent systems intrinsically accommodate the use of advanced, multilevel, modulation formats that can play an important role for bandwidth and/or power efficiency optical transmission systems. In the OPSCODER project, we aim at investigating:

1. Optical sampling for coherent detection, to relax the speed requirements of the receiver’s electronics. Conceive robust algorithms for carrier and phase recovery of the photodetected optically sampled signals and to control the optical tuneability.
2. Design, fabrication and characterization of wavelength tuneable and narrow linewidth pulsed semiconductor laser chip for the realization of optical sampling in coherent receivers.

The OPSCODER project is a joint research effort between the Nanophotonics and the Systems Competence Areas at the DTU Photonics Department. Therefore, the current PhD project entails rich possibilities for cross-disciplinary work, especially covering the path from system specifications, through chip design, fabrication and test, and finally laboratory systems experiments. The PhD candidate will pursue research into systems theoretical limits, chip design, device test and characterisation and laboratory experimental work.
The candidate should have a master’s degree in engineering, physics or equivalent and an excellent background in telecommunications, optical communication, or semiconductor devices.
The candidates for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained from the DTU website (http://www.dtu.dk/English/Research/PhD_programme.aspx) or by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 4525 1176 or +45 4525 1177.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.
