Image processing software

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Two possible exjobb projects are available to develop or port image processing software.

The workplace is a scientific laboratory located at the Karolinska Institutet and Södertörns Högskola, in the research laboratory of Dr. Thomas Bürglin.
(http://www.biosci.ki.se/groups/tbu/). In the laboratory the development of the little worm Caenorhabditis elegans is studied, which was the subject of the Nobel prize in Medicine 2002. Using sophisticated microscopy techniques, the laboratory is generating 4-dimensional (space and time) image recordings in two separate channels. In one channel, 4D images of the developing Caenorhabditis elegans embryo are recorded to follow all cell divisions during development, in the second channel the activity of a green fluorescent marker is followed that tracks the activity of particular genes during development.

In order to to convert these 4D image data into suitable presentations, conversion software is necessary. Two software applications have already been developed, but need to either be updated or replaced with new applications that have better functionality.
One software should produce either Quicktime movies of particular image slices through time (time-lapse), the other software package should project and collapse the green fluorescent gene activity from 3D space into a quicktime movie (e.g. http://www.biosci.ki.se/groups/tbu/research/ceh.mov). Other image processing tools represent also be possible projects, there are many aspects of the 4D microscope images that need processing.
In addition, particle tracking to support our VirtualWorm-base software package are also possible projects (celegans.sh.se).

The laboratory is interesting in finding individuals who would like to work on novel projects in an interdisciplinary environment.
Project size can be adjusted and depends also on experience of applicant.
Projects are expected to be executed in C++, using either Trolltech QT as user interface,
or Mac Os X Carbon or Cocoa APIs.
