Modelling of particle flows in the magnetosphere of Mercury

Mercury's planetary magnetic field has been measured during two quick fly-bys of the NASA spacecraft Mariner 10. From these data the magnetic field has been approximated as a dipole whose centre is offset by about 0.2 planetary radius relative to the centre of the planet.

The dipole offset means that Mercury's magnetosphere is asymmetrical as regards trapped particles and possible weak ring currents and also that photo and/or secondary electrons emitted from the planetary surface will experience loss cones of different sizes depending on which hemisphere they are emitted from. The latter effect causes a weak parallel electric field along the planetary magnetic field, a net flow of charged particles between the two hemispheres, or a combination of both effects.

The aim of this project is to construct a simple model of Mercury's magnetic field and calculate the charge flows discussed above. Primarily, the effects will be considered separately. A possible extension is to consider different combinations of plasma populations and electrons emitted from the surface.

Basic knowledge of plasma physics and space physics is assumed. Interest in computer programming and numerical methods is useful.
