Simulation of OFDM transmitter radio channel - receiver (Gävle)

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Background
At the Department of Electronics at University of Gävle (ITB/Electronics) a research project on characterization and modelling of nonlinear properties and memory effects of radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) and analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs) for mobile telecommunication application has been going for a little more than a year. The project has a cross-disciplinary character and is financially supported by some industrial partners. For practical purpose the investigated PAs have been designed for the third generation mobile tele-communication system (3G) and the used signal have been WCDMA signals. In other technologies, like WLAN and the emerging WiMAX, OFDM signals are used. OFDM signals may also be used for the future ¿Super 3G¿. It is of interest for the future to investigate how OFDM signals behave in the type of nonlinear behaviour models that have been developed at ITB/Electronics and it is therefore motivated with a Diploma Work or Master¿s Thesis project in the field of OFDM signals in nonlinear dynamic systems. The proposed project is in the field of Signal Processing.

Objective

The objectives of the project are to deliver:

1. A program package in Matlab containing

Generation of OFDM signals for at least one of the standards for WiMAX, WLAN, and Super3G. At least one PAR reduction method should be included. The code should have been verified experimentally, i.e. downloaded to an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) and measured at radio frequencies by a vector signal analyzer.
Software for simulating of a transmitter, a simple radio-channel, and a receiver. Calculation of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) should be included. The radio-channel could be a time invariant filter and should include behavioural models of the RF PA. The latter models have already been formulated at ITB/Electronics.

2. A written report containing

a) Brief documentation of the Matlab code.
b) The results of the simulations of OFDM signals in the system (transmitter, a radio-channel, and a receiver). The simulations should include how different PAR-reduction methods and memory effects and nonlinearities in the channel model ( in this case in the PA model) affect BER and EVM. The simulation results should be compared to the relevant standards.

Project description
Work plan

The work will consist of:

1. An initial literature study of OFDM signals and reading of relevant standards for OFDM signals for the WiMAX, WLAN, and Super-3G. Background material for the transmitter, radio channel, and receiver must be found.
2. Systemization of the software
2. Implemenation in Matlab.
3. Simulations.
4. If there is time measurements on a real PA could be made and the simulations compared to experimental data. The combination of PAR-reduction algorithms and digital predistortion (DPD) algorithms developed at ITB/Electronics could be tested.

Time Plan
The work is expected to take approximately 20 weeks.

Supervision
The supervisor will be Dr. Daniel Rönnow (DRw). Possibly Dr. Rönnow will be the examiner, in which case MSc Magnus Isaksson or Tekn. Lic. Niclas Björsell will be the supervisor.

Prerequisites

· Passed the course ¿Modulation and coding¿ at the Master program in Telecommunication at University of Gävle or the corresponding knowledge.
· Basic knowledge of Matlab.
· Experience of using standard instruments (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer etc) for radio measurements is an advantage.
