Implementation of an embedded Linux framework combining a multimedia acccelerator with an OMAP application processor

Texas Instruments is the world leader in embedded processors for mobile devices. Our OMAP family of application processors provides the necessary multimedia performance for today's and tomorrows handsets and is used by many of the leading handset manufacturers.
OMAP2420 is the first device in the family of next generation application processors. It is based on ARM11.
OMAP-DM290 is a dedicated multimedia and camera accelerator for use in conjunction with typically ARM-based host processors. It augments the multimedia capabilities of such host processors, allowing camera resolutions well above 2Megapixel while performing camera parameter control as well as image compression and decompression.
A complete OMAP-based framework shall be developed combining OMAP-DM290 and OMAP2420. This shall be used to demonstrate the OMAP-DM290 functionality to potential customers and to subsequently shorten their integration time.
This framework shall be implemented using Linux as operating system and run on the OMAP2420 software development platform.

Within this project, the student shall:

1. Develop and implement a hardware framework for connecting DM290 and OMAP2420

2. Implement and test the required software modules for:
a. Data exchange between DM290 and OMAP2420 via parallel camera port
b. Data exchange between DM290 and OMAP2420 via compact camera port (CCP)
c. Boot and control of DM290 by OMAP2420 via SPI
d. Data storage via MMC / SD
e. Data visualization via TV and LCD
f. User interaction

3. Implement an overall Linux-based framework that integrates above components into an intuitive, easy to use and reusable framework.

This project will provide you with a good understanding of embedded Linux in the mobile terminal development, give you access to the latest hardware and will make you familiar with industry-standard development tools.
You will gain an in-dept understanding of the industry-leading OMAP application processor platform and of next generation mobile terminal imaging solutions.
You will cooperate in this project with other members of our team from different sites.

The project will be based in our Stockholm office. The duration will be 5 month beginning end of August / early September.

In our candidate selection, we put strong emphasis on previous experience in the area of Linux programming and the ability to work independently.
More generally, we expect the following skills from the successful applicant:

- Good knowledge of Linux including the Linux kernel and the Linux build system is a must
- Previous experience in developing Linux applications would be an advantage
- Experience with embedded Linux would also be an advantage
- Fluent English is a must
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to cooperate with colleagues in other countries

Your application should contain electronic copies of / references about:

- Relevant experience in the area of Linux / Embedded Linux / Programming for embedded systems
- Achieved grades in the university studies
- Previous work / internships
