Characterization of an electrochemical transistor

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Semiconducting and conducting polymers or molecules have successfully been included as the active material in many different electronic devices such as field-effect transistors, light emitting diodes and different electrochemical devices. In electrochemical devices both electrons and ions is utilized as the charge carriers.

In our group we have developed an organic electrochemical transistorbased on PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulphonate), where PSS is the counter ion to the conducting polymer PEDOT. PSS is working similar to a doping ion in a non-organic semiconducting material. The transistor has been utilized as a part of an organic electrochemical smart pixel2. The main principle of the transistor is to electrochemically switch the active area in the transistor channel between different states of conductivity, corresponding to different doping levels.

The goal with this project is to answer some questions about the geometrical influence on the transistor parameters, such as switching time, on/off ratio, and saturation behavior.

The goal will be reached through the following steps:

Planning of construction and characterization of the devices
Design of devices
Fabrication of the devices in clean room environment
Electrical characterization
Analysis of data
You will learn about conducting polymers and electrochemical devices. Also, you will learn different processing techniques in our clean room.
