Numerical simulation of fibre flow and fibre treatment in the refining zone

When producing paper, one important step of the pulp reparation is the process of refining fibers. This process takes place before the fibre suspension enters the paper machine through the head box where it will be jetted out as a thin sheet that after additional dewatering and drying processes will form the ready-to-use paper. The refiner consists of a rotor located in-between two stators. It is regarding how the fibre suspension is behaving in the vicinity of bar crossings this project is focusing on since the fibre refining has a great impact on the final product, i.e. the paper.

Two of the main questions that will be addressed in this project are where the fiber treatment occurs and to which main driving mechanism this process can be connected with. This is not fully understood; does the refining of fibres occurs at the bar edges, between the bars or parhaps in the vicinity of the bar edges? Bending, tensile strain as well as surface shear stresses are all be possible driving mechanisms. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Innventia and KTH Mechanics using numerical simulations in order to model the fluid flow between the rotor and stator.

Knowledge in Fluid mechanics is required. Familarity with CFD is desirable.
