Object recognition from still camera using OpenCV and Android

Today object recognition is growing in popularity and e.g. Android phones provide bar code scanning. However when dealing with images beyond that (more complicated than barcodes), the Android libraries are not able to decode such images. The images may consist of pattern presented on a display with illumination which does not give a sharp contrast.
The task is to develop a software that recognizes certain patterns. In this task the pattern will consist of numbers (Base 10). The pattern will be displayed on a display (mobile phone, vending machines, TV screen etc.) and captured by a mobile phone's camera. The captured image will then be decoded by the recognition software, which will be developed during this project. The library to be used for object recognition development is OpenCV.
