Bioinformatic analysis of gene content in pathogenic human parasites

Our research group study the genetics of microbial pathogens, including human viruses, the blood parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and the gut parasite Giardia lamblia.
Our approach exploit new DNA sequencing technologies which in short time can retrieve the genome sequence of a specified microbe. By comparing sequence data of virulent and nonvirulent parasite strains, it is possible to determine genetic factors that cause virulence and pathogenicity.
We propose the following project: Bioinformatic analysis of gene content in pathogenic human parasites.
Main objectives:
The main objective is to examine the gene content between two strains of parasites using available bioinformatic tools. The project would involve evolutionary analysis of genes and gene families. The project will be conduced using available bioinformatic tools.
The project requires some basic knowledge about script programming (Perl, Python or similar) and an interest in biology. Some knowledge about Linux is beneficial.
