Driver behavior model estimation
Driver behavior modeling plays important roles in traffic simulation modeling for transport planning and management as well as development of advanced driving assistance systems. In the Centre for Traffic Research (originally called Centre for Traffic-simulation Research), we have collected a large amount of data via an instrumented vehicle produced in Volvo R&D on Swedish roads. Therefore, it is possible to model driver behavior based on the data collected.
In this thesis, we are focused on a particular type of driver behavior, car following, describing driver reactive actions when driving a car behind one or more leading vehicle in traffic flow. The main task is to estimate car-following models using collected data.
We expect a student who has enough credits to start a Master thesis. Solid analytical knowledge in mathematical modeling and statistical data analysis will be important. In particular, student with education in time series analysis and Kalman filtering as well as being familiar with MATLAB or another computing language will give him-or herself a merit to complete the thesis in time.
The work will satisfy the requirement of a full-time master thesis in KTH, equivalent to 6 month course work of 30 credits. As its interdisciplinary nature, the thesis can be examined in several fields such as computer science, electrical engineering and transportation systems, depending on the major of the student.
