Semantic Interoperability of Electronic Health Record Systems
Uganda, east African country, has embraced on implementation of ICT4MPOWER EHR System, which can provide better patient information flow between different health units, and provide effective collaboration of health units in order to provide continuity of care for the patients, especially in rural areas.
There are several international standards and de facto standards for EHR Systems that are formulated. These standards consider issues such as semantic interoperability, provision of flexible workflows, and other critical aspects for consideration when developing EHR Systems. An important de facto standard accepted in several countries is OpenEHR. OpenEHR focuses on semantic interoperability, through developing reusable archetypes and templates. This is a challenging task, considering different terminologies and medical dictionaries used in different countries.
Therefore, the thesis project will investigate OpenEHR Architecture, especially the usage of Archetypes and Templates, and provide a roadmap and prototype for integrating reusable archetypes and templates within ICT4MPOWER EHR Architecture. Detailed formulation of thesis work will be done after selection of successful candidates.
We are looking for 1 or 2 M.Sc students that are skilled in web technologies, have some programming experience, preferably in Perl or Python. Practical experience from health organizations is a merit, but not mandatory. Preferred candidate shall have experience of working independently and in the team, and ability to solve complex problems with simple solutions.
Financial compensations will be agreed with selected students.
