Visualization of Environmental Data

Background

Wireless sensor networks consist of small embedded computing systems that sense the environment and transfer the sensed data to a base station for processing. These systems enable the collection of huge amounts of data about our environment at a low cost. SICS is a major player in wireless sensor networks and SICS researchers have developed sensor network application that collect data about historic buildings, consumption of electrical energy and data from the Baltic Sea.

To fully comprehend this kind of data is both a time consuming and error prune task. Information Visualization, a research field in itself, is targeting the analysis of abstract data sets by transforming data into visual form -- thus relying on our human vision and cognitive abilities to understand the meaning of complex data . Visualization employs methods and techniques from many fields including interactive graphics, imaging, and visual design.

Thesis Content

The overall goal of the work is to construct a (potentially web-based) visualization tool that effectively can used to analyze environmental data collected from sensor networks.

The work will be divided into the following tasks
1. Short study of work in Information Visualization related to environmental data.
2. Short study of existing tools and techniques suitable for visualization of environmental data.
3. Implementation of relevant visual views utilizing and extending an existing architecture.
4. Evaluation and testing of the implemented tool.
5. A thesis report with task 1 and 2 as background. Focus and main contribution is to be task 3 and 4.

Candidate requirements

The applicant should have
an interest in visualization and computer graphics,
experience in Java and JavaScript programming,
an interest in building robust, modular and re-usable software,
an interest of testing and comparing different technical approaches/solutions,
an interest in the process of analyzing environmental data,
and an interest to discuss problems and approaches with colleagues and end users.
