Deposit of side streams from xylan isolation process
Xylophane AB is a start-up company, which is developing a renewable barrier material for packaging. The material is a barrier to oxygen, grease and aroma and can be used to extend shelf life of oxygen sensitive, greasy and aromatic products. Today, materials such as the synthetic plastic EVOH and aluminium foil dominate the market. Recycling these materials incorporated in a multilayer structure is complicated. In addition, prices of crude oil and metals are expected to increase further in the future. Therefore, the packaging industry has a great interest in finding renewable, cost efficient and functional alternatives.
Xylophane AB’s barrier is based on the biopolymer xylan which can be extracted from agricultural and forest residuals. The process consists of three main steps: chemical treatment, membrane filtration and drying.
The extraction process for producing xylan creates a relative large amount of solid waste material. To have an environmentally sustainable production process with good process economy finding a market or deposit for this material is important. This thesis will include evaluation and comparison of different methods for disposal of organic material, for example anaerobic decomposion, gasification and combustion. Possible pre-treatment of material, process parameters and energy outcome of different methods will be investigated as well as distribution and economical aspects.
This master thesis is suitable for students in chemical engineering, preferably with specialisation in process technology. We are looking for a person who is interested in working in an innovative and technology oriented company.
