Designing validation experiment(s)

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Background:

Driver’s head and eye movement together with his/her face-expression are of interest to vehicle manufacturers. Currently, eye tracker technologies allow us to collect the above mentioned data. Due to personal integrity and personal data protection act, it is highly desired to make the driver-face anonymous while keeping his/her original face-expression. In a project called UnEye, Chalmers together with industrial partners SmartEye, Räven, Volvo Cars, and AB Volvo, are exploring a method to make driver-face anonymous while keeping his/her original face-expression.

This MSc project shall contribute to the UnEye project, specifically in:
1. Validating whether the method being explored prevents any human reader from recognising the identity of the original driver while still enabling the human reader to recognise the driver’s original face-expression.
2. Validating that the original face of the driver cannot be identified from the model generated by the method being explored.

The main tasks

Study and understand the nature of the problem; Set up an experimental design to do the two validation tasks (propose and motivate how the experiment should be conducted including a suitable sampling method to use, what kind of face-images to be tested, number of participants, etc to get statistically sound results); Conduct the experiments, including involvement in recruitment of participants; Analyse and present the results.

The students

This project is suitable for 1 or 2 students who are eager to use their knowledge on experimental design and statistics to solve a real problem in industry. Both Chalmers and non-Chalmers students are welcome to apply. But note that the project is registered as a MSc project at Chalmers-Applied Mechanics.

Through this project, it is expected that the students shall advance their research skills, problem solving, team work, writing and presentation skills, as well as project management skills. Further they shall gain deeper experience in experimental design and statistics, as well as gain knowledge and insight into driver behavioural study. Supervision shall be provided throughout, guidance from a statistical expert could also be provided.

The project (30 credits) will start on 1 September 2010 or as soon as possible after that.
