HD video transmission over fiber and power line

Aim:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the possibility of transmission of high definition video over an existing communication technology using fiber or power line.

The thesis is consisted of two phases: study phase and prototype phase. In the study phase, the candidates perform the feasibility study on HD-Video transmission over the considered technologies. The existing technologies should be compared from several aspects such as components, capacity, cost, etc. Also, the potential problems should be identified and modifications to the existing technologies should be proposed to address these issues. The possibility of utilizing compression to increase the capacity should be investigated and potential difficulties should be identified.

In the second part of the thesis, students will build a prototype adaptor board based on the solutions in the study phase. The purpose of the adaptor board is to translate the HDMI interface to the format suitable for each of the considered technologies.

Competence:
We are looking for two bright M.Sc. students with interests in electronics, embedded programming, and video/signal processing. At least one of the candidates is required to have strong background in electronics design, VHDL, and embedded programming. Both candidates are expected to have good programming skills in C/C++. It is also advantageous to have general knowledge on source coding and video/signal processing.
