Evaluate and Investigate Pro-cognitive Substances
In life, we experience situations daily when we wished we had better cognitive functions. This desire has generated a substantial number of proposed ways to improve our normal cognitive abilities. This includes the use of pharmacological agents to enhance cognitive performance in everyday life. Based on preclinical research at the Department of Pharmacology we have developed a novel compound that may enhance cognitive function in normal subjects, namely eidisineTM. However, there are numerous compounds that claim to have similar pro-cognitive effects, but unlike for eidisine, the claims are not always backed up by scientific findings. Eidisine has been demonstrated to improve pre-attentive information processing, non-associative learning and memory formation. The present project will be performed in collaboration between the Department of Pharmacology at Gothenburg University and Cognite AB (www.cognite.se).
1) What are the main competitors to eidisine in the field of cognitive enhancers?
2) Can synergistic effects be achieved by combining such compounds with eidisine?
These questions will be answered by extensive literature search and subsequent ranking of potential pro-cognitive substances. This ranking should take both preclinical and clinical data as well as product development potential into account. Based on the ranking, 1-3 substances will be tested in combination with eidisine in order to investigate synergistic effect on cognitive function. The literature search will include publications on pubmed, patents and other data bases available through the University of Gothenburg. Cognitive functions will be tested in animal models, such as the prepulse inhibition model and novel object recognition model.
