Thesis work: Analysis of the vigor wave energy converter prototype
Vigor Wave Energy AB was formed in 2009 to develop and commercialize a brand new concept within wave energy extraction:
The Vigor Wave Energy Converter.
The principle is patented and practical scale tests in wave tank have shown highly positive results.
CFD-simulations and calculations indicates that our concept will be able to extract very high energy levels in a cost-effectively way.
Developmental work is conducted at our own locations in Gothenburg, in close cooperation with universities, institutions and companies with marine expertise and experience. The work is marked by enthusiasm, a strong entrepreneurial driving force and active ownership.
Our business idea is to develop and sell 1-100 MW wave power plants to leading power companies.
Our goal is, together with the help of the right constellation of industrial and financial partners, to develop, produce, install, and verify a full scale wave power station within 5-7 years.
Positioning has been accomplished and is ongoing in the European wave power and energy sector.
The Vigor Wave Energy Converter is built on a proprietary, unique, patented principle.
The main component is a hose on the water’s surface, which follows the movements of the waves. Letting in water and air into the hose create batches that “surf” inside the hose. The batches’ movements create energy in the form of pressure. The water is then pushed through a turbine, driving a generator that converts the pressure into electrical energy.
Our calculations show that one relatively simple hose can generate more than 3 MW.
Our vision is to connect a large number of hoses to a connected unit with one common turbine. This wave power station is calculated to deliver more than 100 MW.
The student/s is to perform theoretical calculations and depending on previus knowledge CFD simula-tions of the Vigor Wave Energy Converter. These calculations are used to optimize the converter, both in energy production but also in terms of material consumption and risks. A special scenario is dee-pley analysed in terms of pressure build up and energy production.
The thesis can be performed individually or by two students. The student/s will have a supervisor at the University, and one at Vigor Wave Energy Con-verter. To qualify, you should have knowledge about fluid mechanics, physics and/or mechanical engi-neering. An interest in renewable energy is also advantageous. Final report shall be in English.
