Objective Evaluation of 3D Video Quality
3D video technology is already being used in movies and games, and TV sets with 3D video capabilities are becoming more and more common. The usage of 3D video is expected to increase also in other areas such as conference services, health applications, information and entertainment services, and personal communication. In order to be successful though, the video quality is of highest importance: the 3D video quality needs to be at least as good as for 2D video. A good way to achieve this is to use objective methods to monitor and measure the 3D video quality.
Perceived quality is typically evaluated in subjective tests, but objective models are frequently used to estimate the outcome of such tests. There are several standardized models for estimating 2D video quality, but no models have yet been standardized for 3D.
The goal of this thesis is to study objective measures suitable for estimating 3D video quality. Your task will be to study existing 2D measures suitable for 3D quality evaluation and new measures described in the literature suggested for 3D video quality estimation, implement them in PC software and evaluate their performance against subjective test data (new tests might be needed). To a large extent you will be free to invent and test your own ideas in this area.
We are looking for a self-motivated M.Sc. student, preferably in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics, or equivalent, with an interest in video or signal processing.
The work is research oriented, so the ability to learn quickly, work independently and identify problems and solutions is necessary. Knowledge of video and signal processing, programming (C/C++/Matlab) is meriting.
Ericsson Research – Visual Technology
The thesis work will be done at the Visual Technology unit at Ericsson Research in Kista outside Stockholm. The unit is responsible for research related to video coding, quality and processing for multimedia communication and distribution.
