Master thesis project: CFD simulations of flow in the rotor of a disc refiner.
papermaking process. The wood fibres of the pulp are here mechanically treated to
make them more flexible and ruptured, which gives a paper product of better quality.
In the disc refiner the pulp is passed in between the narrow space of two discs, one of
which is rotating. The opposing discs are grooved with channels of sharp edges,
which acts to deform the fibres of the pulp, see figure below. The details of the flow
between the discs of a refiner and how the refinement process works, is still not fully
understood. Since it is a very energy-demanding process there are a lot of incentives
to improve and optimize the refining process.
The purpose of the project is to develop a CFD-method to investigate the detailed
flow in between the stator and the rotor of the refiner. This includes modelling the
flow channels of the discs and their relative motion due to the motion of the rotor.
Thus, the boundaries of the flow domain are not fixed. Within the project you shall
implement the method in a commercial flow solver.
This project is initiated by INNVENTIA who has a disc refiner running for
experimental purposes. The work shall be carried out in cooperation with
INNVENTIA and the Department of Mechanics at KTH.
