Human-Robot Dialog for Scene Understanding

A key challenge in robotics is to enable a robot to act in new situations and handle increased uncertainty. One way to achieve this objective is to put a ‘human in the loop’ and to allow the robot to learn from him or her through natural dialogue. The specific problem that we are considering is
scene understanding, in which the robot has to correctly enumerate how many objects there are in the scene, segment them accurately and describe them in terms of their attributes and their relative spatial positioning. This would then allow it to learn about new objects for later recognition.

To achieve this, we would like to first study how humans use these spatial relations. A Master thesis would start off with literature research. This would be followed by the design and performance of studies, investigating how test subjects might interact with a robot in this task.

The student who chooses this project as a Master thesis should have knowledge of statistical methods, user studies and experimental methods. A background in some of the following areas would be nice, but is not required: dialogue systems / natural language processing, speech technology, robotics and computer vision, human-computer interaction.
