Modeling surface roughness in radiative transfer

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Do you want to work with frontline research that is industrially relevant? Do you like using computers to solve physical problems? Then we can provide a thesis work for you.

Our group leads the large research project PaperOpt, which is conducted in collaboration between Mid Sweden University, Innventia, Karlstad University, Linköping University and eight industrial partners. The thesis work will be supervised by us at Mid Sweden University, but our large network of industrial and academic partners can also provide support.

Our group has previously supervised two thesis works that have received the Bo Rydin price for best thesis work.

In one of the PhD projects in PaperOpt we use radiative transfer (RT) models to better understand how light is scattered in paper and print. RT theory was originally developed by astrophysicists but also describes how media such as paper scatter and absorb light. It can be combined with measurements of the light reflected from paper to assess the scattering characteristics of the paper, which is of great importance to the paper and print industry. We can now offer a thesis work with the objective to include surface roughness in a Matlab implementation of a numerical solution of the RT equation.

Tentative plan of thesis work:
1. Literature studies to become familiar with theory and existing Matlab code. 2. Implementation of chosen models for surface roughness. 3. Evaluation of model performance and comparisons with goniophotometer (angle resolved reflectance) measurements.

There are several open research issues that can be pursued by the student depending on how well the work proceeds.

Salary will be paid.
