True 3D visualization for neurosurgery

The project objective is to add true 3D display capabilities to treatment planning systems for stereotactic neurosurgery and radiosurgery.

Elekta has developed treatment planning tools for stereotactic and radiation therapy. These tools run on Linux workstations and currently use standard 2D monitors for 2D and 3D visualization of patient images and various aspects of treatment plans, such as 3D dose distributions. In recent years a number of technologies for producing true 3D displays have emerged, and it would be valuable to add support for such displays to Elekta treatment planning systems. Elekta and Setred have started a research collaboration to develop such a treatment planning system, using Setred’s high-end glasses-free 3D display technology. In this thesis project, a prototype system will be designed, developed and evaluated in collaboration with Elekta and Setred engineers.
