Frequency response analysis (FRA) on rotating machines (generators and motors)

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Frequency response analysis (FRA) is already common and increasingly applied in the field of transformers: it consists in measurement of impedance between various combinations of terminals, over a range of swept frequency typically from power frequency up to many kilohertz. The results are used in condition assessment, to spot trends that might indicate worrying changes such as bending of conductors.

Rotating machines --- electrical generators and motors --- also consist of coils of insulated conductors and a magnetic core, and also are important assets on which various methods of condition assessment are used. Electrical generators or large motors will be studied in this project, focused on electrical means of monitoring and assessing the ageing of windings, bearings and any commutator. There are many differences between rotating-machines and transformers, in the insulation materials, insulation geometry, and arrangement of the magnetic and electric circuit: this will require analysis of how much of the established FRA knowledge can be applied to rotating machines.

The student should be prepared to use lumped and/or distributed LCR circuits modelling the rather complex construction of machine windings. The magnetic behaviour of the laminated iron core is likely to need to be included. Literature from the transformer area as well as about pulse propagation in machine windings will be used.
