Bionanocomposite Aerogels

The work will be done mainly in Viikki Campus, Helsinki, starting in spring 2012. The topic of the thesis is to study the enzyme-assisted aerogel formation from hemicelluloses and nanofibrillated cellulose. Understanding the interactions and finding novel applications for cellulose and hemicelluloses address environmental and economic challenges and the growing need for using renewable bioresources in a sustainable way. Polysaccharide-based aerogels are highly porous and lightweight solid materials, finding potential applications, e.g., as biocompatible delivery system for dosing of drugs, biodegradable packaging materials, and support for enzymatic catalysts in brewing industry and bio-labelled laundry powders.

The work includes enzymatic modification of hemicelluloses and chemical characterization of the products, preparation of aerogels, and analysis of their physical and mechanical properties. The successful candidate is a master’s student in chemical engineering, polymer science, materials science or equivalent with nearly all of his/her studies except the master’s thesis completed, and with strong abilities in English.

University of Helsinki will help in finding accommodation in Helsinki during the work. The student will receive a grant of 3 × 1000 EUR. The master’s thesis will be graded and credits granted by KTH, Sweden.
