Material optimization for slide-plates used for brazing of stainless-steel heat exchanger

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
TitanX Engine Cooling (www.titanx.com) develops, manufactures and sells engine-cooling components and modules to the global commercial vehicle market. Most of the coolers follow a similar manufacturing process with the use of brazing technology.

For heavy-duty application oil coolers, the cores are manufactured in stainless steel. The brazing is made in vaccum furnaces with a top temperature around 1100 degrees celsius in order to reach copper melting point.
Each heat exchanger is assembled and fixed on a brazing fixture. This brazing fixture is made up of graphite, in order to keep same material property at high temperature. However contact between the stainless steel heat exchanger and the graphite fixture must be avoid for two main reasons: different material elongation and risk for the heat exchanger to stick to the fixture. Therefore a “slide-plate” is used between the heat exchanger and the graphite fixtures. The specifications of this “slide-plate”are:
- to keep good material property at high temperature
- to not wear out fast (low frequency refurbishment/exchange)
- to not stick to the graphite fixture and the heat exchanger
- to be economically viable
- to be easy manufactured

TitanX is looking for a better material to replace our current “slide-plate”.
TitanX Linköping propose to co-operate with a university sharing a Master thesis work in the field of high temperature material.

The basic content of the work is:
• Detailed specification
• Theoritical material investigation
• Material and/or coating selection
• Tests in production
• Real scale validation
• Presentation & Report in English
