Development of piezo electric polymer fibrers

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a polymorphic polymer which, when made to crystallize in its polar form, yields piezo- and pyroelectric properties. In recent years, PVDF has found its way towards intelligent textile applications. Researchers have attempted to create e.g. sensors for cardiorespiratory monitoring during sleep to be placed under the bed sheets or integrated into a belt, a wearable sensor to be placed on the fingertips for reading Braille and energy-harvesting devices inside a shoe. In all these examples, sensors were constructed by adding a commercially available PVDF film to a textile material.

The proposed diploma work will investigate the possibilities of creating an electroactive fibre or yarn for true integration into textile materials. The PVDF fibers are produced by melt spinning using a pilot melt spinning line at Swerea IVF. This line is equiped for bi-component extrusion allowing for core/sheath structured fibers. The core material will be a conductive compound and the sheath material PVDF. Students with an interest in polymer physiscs and processing are welcome to this challenging task.
